Genuine hand crafted Bone, Jade, Silver, Wood & Pearl Shell pendants, carvings, gifts, jewelry & art from New Zealand & The Pacific. Maori bone carvings, jade carvings and art from the best of New Zealand artists.
New Zealand is known as "Aotearoa" to the Maori which means "Land of the long white cloud" and refers to the clouds hanging over the mountain peaks which the ancient Pacific island settlers in their canoes first noticed as they approached the land.
Maori bone carvings and artwork have a very special feel about them, unlike anything else you will ever experience. Their milky white appearance and soft flowing lines are just the start. They are soft and warm to the touch yet the finish is like polished glass, they seem to blend with your body and become a part of you, especially when worn as a pendent against your skin. Over a period of time bone carvings absorb oils from your skin and change colour to a very light honey gold. The Maori believe this to be the carving taking on some of your spirituality or essence and thus truly becoming a part of the wearer.
Jade, known locally as "Greenstone" is a beautiful semi translucent stone with many shades of green and an irresistible aura of strength and quality, particularly when used in traditional Maori style jade pendants.
New Zealand jade or "Pounamu" in Maori is a very special and rare jade often with spectacular swirls of colour through it.
Many carvers now also use other exotic jades imported from around the world for their work.
The importance of the bone and jade carvings and crafts to the Maori people is shown very well in the recent and highly recommended hit movie Whale Rider. The form of the ancient Tiki in particular is often seen being worn by Pai during the movie.
Many of the caste and crew of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy also now wear these carvings showing just how powerful they are when worn by people who are connected to our land... or in their case Middle Earth.
Mother of Pearl carvings are simply stunning, with layers of rich gold or black through the silver/white pearl. They have to be seen to be believed!
Paua shell is a rainbow blend of rich blues, greens, yellows and blacks creating a amazing shifting kaleidoscope of colour which goes very well with silver or gold..
A bone, jade or pearl carving is a very special piece of personal artwork to wear yourself or give to a loved one.
Maori carvings include many traditional forms or elements such as the Hei Matau an ornamental fish hook, the Koru meaning purity and new life, the twist which an eternity symbol and the Manaia which is a spiritual guardian. These elements are often combined to tell a very powerful story. Maori also carve many other designs in bone, jade, wood and shell from sacred animals such as the whale, the ray, dolphins, sharks and turtles to mythical beings and deities such as the Taniwha, Pekapeka and Koropepe, each of which has a great story to tell.
Each piece is hand crafted by real artists so even if following the same design, no two pieces will ever be exactly the same. Unique pieces in bone and pearl can also be designed and hand made especially for you, telling your story through traditional styling and some may also include exotic inlays of Paua or pearl shell.
Every carving comes with a traditional style cord, a woven flax presentation bag and a description of the meaning or story behind the design.
The average size is 50mm long, (2 inches) so they really do represent superb artworks in miniature.
